I really found this book to be quite amazing, such a creative story and one that is filled not only with painful memories that the main character Jefferson Long Soldier experiences during his tours in Iraq, but it is also about the Book One Hundred Years of Solitude, which he feels saved him during those tough times. Jefferson a half Lakota,(Native American) half Mexican American from Santa Fe, comes home after his time at war and cannot seem to get back to a normal life. His obsession with Gabriel Garcia Marques, or GGM as he referred to him, was a big source of comfort to him during and after his tour in Iraq. He would find a passage in the book that seemed to relate to whatever he was going through. He decides to ride a motorcycle to Mexico City where he heard that GGM lived, so that he could thank him for writing the story that saved him.On his journey he finds not only possibilities, hope, but has many of his needs met, all on his way to healing.
I will not go into details, as I think one should experience and interpret, this story for themselves.

I read this in our book club and we all felt it was an amazing book with deep importance. I worry it will never get the recognition it deserves because it is from a small publisher, but I'm thrilled I got to read it! Both the look at a young war veteran's struggles and the celebration of the importance of literature in our lives is powerful and relevant. I hope many people read this book and Sarah Stark continues to write for us readers!
Sarah Stark's book "Out There" is both an homage to Gabriel Garcia Marquez and love letter to high school English teachers everywhere who have inspired us to love literature or shown us how one book can make a difference in our lives.
Though a complicated subject, this book could easily become standard reading in high schools--especially those with a significant population of kids whose friends and family members fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. It may have more relevance to many of them than, say, a "Catcher in the Rye."
As much as I've read about the these two wars, this is the book that left the most indelible impression on me about how the long service and uncertain circumstances could leave lasting scars on its veterans--and how some may find a modicum of healing through things that touch just them.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez's death last month--and Salman Rushdie's essay about him and magical realism in the May 18, 2014 issue of The New York Times Book Review--remind us that in great authors' hands, the technique is just an extended metaphor. (It is also worth noting that "Out There" and Rushdie's essay refer to some of the same passages in "One Hundred Years of Solitude.") It also reminds us that "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is worth reading again--right after you read "Out There."
It is such a pleasure to get engrossed in a story that shares a genuine connection to one's community, to the eloquence and beauty of the written word, as well as with its characters. I found "Out There" to be an inspirational and deeply moving story of a young Santa Fe man's journey back to his life after serving in Iraq. It is hard to know what in life will be a helpful anchor through difficult times and for this young man it is the powerful connection to the writings of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. A purposeful quest sends this young veteran on a journey of gratitude. Along the way he has extraordinary encounters that help him secure a true meaning to his life. I found it a joy to read and I quickly bought more copies to share with friends and family.
This is a story of a young man, growing up Native American in Santa Fe, NM, who returns from two tours of the Iraq war deeply troubled by the deaths he has witnessed and the deaths he has caused. His one salvation is the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. While in Iraq, he doesn't really read the novel but picks out passages that help him realize that life and war are crazy-making for most people. The man's grandmother is his one salvation back in Santa Fe, altogether appropriate since the grandmother in One Hundred Years is one of the few people in that novel who isn't corrupted by what's going on all around her. The only recommendation that I would make for anyone considering buying Out There is that they either read or have read Marquez's novel.
I do live in Santa Fe and I hope to meet the author some day.
I met the author and I know she met the main character and fictionalized him only a little. This is the real deal.
Answers the question,"What will pull you through the hardest of times." At least for this one combat vet. As a Vietnam combat vet I can relate. I always carried a book in a zip lock bag while in Vietnam. Thomas Merton was my author. Kept my head above water. For the character in this novel it was "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez . Not at all far fetched. I was there and did that also. Have to have an anchor in the storm. Literature can save your life.
With horror i have read the news articles about survivors' guilt and the suicides. This work of fiction not only helps me to understand it but also reinforces my belief in the redeeming power of art. It makes clear how unprepared a sensitive American 18-year-old is for war, how unprepared anyone not hardened from an early age is. And it is obvious that we barely understand PTSD and that our leaders don't take responsibility for the damage done emotionally to our service men. That said, this beautiful book is about one young man who is suffering and somehow manages to redeem himself. That he is displaced culturally--part native American. part Hispanic-- doesn't help, but a warm psychologist and Gabriel Garcia Marquez both do.
Keep writing, Sarah Stark. You are needed.
