I read this book from the library as "The Foxes of First Dark" which is its US title about 8 years ago and bought it on Kindle to reread it. It's about the life of a vixen and her cubs with its own rich mythology and fox-religion and follows her from her first mate, to a second mate with a city fox and their cubs, up through her natural death in the last few pages. When I read the book I was a 28 years-old man and the ending managed to bring tears to my eyes.

I would definately recommend this to someone who likes books about "cute" wildlife or books about housecats from their perspective or for Furries who like foxes and other critters.

Hunter Moon Garry Kilworth 9780044406150 Books Reviews

Hunter's Moon is the best piece of animal fiction i have ever read. People say it's the Watership Down for foxes, but i think it's even way better than Watership Down.
Garry Kilworth has written this story in such a way that it really feels you become a fox when reading it. Also, he explains in detail the way foxes see the world, and how they came into existance.
This story is very sad in certain places, but there are a lot of funny parts too, and it's always very exciting. Not only fox lovers, but anybody else won't regret reading this book.
This really is easily one of my favorite books. When I reached the last couple chapters of the book I wanted to finish the book so I could pass it on to someone else and spread the word. But at the same time I didn't want to finish it because I really wanted it to keep going; and I'm not much of a book person. I've only just gotten into reading full-length stories about a year or so ago. I have to agree with everyone else here this really is the best book about foxes. So if you are fascinated with the creature (like I am) then you'll definitely like this book. It makes you feel the large amounts of fear and risk they constantly have to live through in their lives. There are a lot of great characters in this book; they even have their own traditions and rituals they go through as well as having their own beliefs about the world around them. There is so much to be said about this wonderful book, but it's hard to say for sure without spoiling it. I'd have to say if you love foxes or animals in general I strongly suggest you make this great book a part of your collection. You won't regret it.
Slow read again. I had trouble getting into it.
The author does an excellent job of thinking like a fox. This amorphism helps in respecting animals and their relationships with each other and different species. I loved itl
A book I really enjoyed. Good skill from the author, interesting characters and plotline.
Of particular quality the descriptions and the use of language.
It is not perfect (like for some decisions toward the the development of a minor character... the reader guess he may be important but it turns a bit insignificant), but it's clearly a great addition to the animal literature.
I remember taking this book out from the library when I was a kid, and was so glad to find it here! The story is just as I remembered it.
Oh how I enjoyed every word. Great story, great characters, and so well written. Did not want this to end
