I've been re-reading the Hathaways and I remembered that I didn't love this one. I wasn't wrong because it didn't improve with re-reading. There are loads of reviews so I'm not going to rehash the plot.

+++Spoilers+++
I didn't like the way the H treated the h at all. Ms Kleypas tries to soften the blows to come by telling us how the H has always loved her. He never feels good enough and rejects her over and over again to the point of being really painful to read. He compromises her and publically rejects her by not offering for her. Later he pulls a caveman move but it was too late for me. Worse still is that after he finally 'commits' to her - she makes him promise not to go back on his commitment. What happens? He wavers again because she 'lied' to him. As for the h, she flung herself at him from beginning to end and it was awful to read - it's not a plotline I like at all. Lastly and I don't usually find this with this author but there were a lot of steamy scenes (not too explicit) but they didn't further the story so they seemed like 'fillers'. I doubt that I'll ever pick this one up again

Why not a lower rating? Because I love the series and liked the glimpses of the other characters. Plus the author's writing is superb.

I give this two stars only because I like Lisa Kleypas' writing, in general. If this hadn't been written by one of my favorite authors, I would have given it one star at best. The storyline is downright boring. The book was a drag pretty much from the outset. By Chapter 2, I was starting to skim the contents. I just couldn't get into the story. In addition to a bland storyline that held no interest, the H/h were both unbearable. I found nothing to like about Kev Merripen. He was an annoying jerk with zero personality. Win wasn't a jerk, but she was annoying in her own way. She acted like a desperate idiot throughout most of the book. There was just nothing appealing here, and definitely nothing that ever got me interested in the story. It was a total drag from start to finish, and I was relieved to finally be done with it. A very disappointing entry from Ms. Kleypas.
The second book in the Hathaway series features Win and Kev, although the other family members are satisfactorily present as well. Win and Kev have the long unrequited love situation, ever since the Hathaway family took Kev in as a boy. Kev, given his known background, feels he is in no way worthy of Win's affection . Win, still recovering from scarlet fever, is willing to spend two years in France under medical treatment to prove to Kev thar she is well enough to marry. However, even when she returns healthy, Kev still remains reluctant to commit. Fortunately, there aren't any wilting violets in the Hathaway family and the siblings are more than willing to give the recalcitrant couple a shove in the right direction. Of course, it's not all just about Kev and Win, Leo's stay in France as Win's chaperone did wonders for his health as well. Kev busied himself rebuilding and managing the estate while they were away, Cam and Amelia settled into married life, and the two youngest girls procured a very interesting governess. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys seeing a robust family dynamic woven through the story. All of the Hathaway clan make each book so much more entertaining than if they just focused on the couple themselves.
When I read the first 30 pages, I thought to myself, "Is this a WUTHERING HEIGHTS wannabe?' It had the Gypsy boy, the kind benefactor, the lovely young girl who grows to love the boy. Emily Bronte did all this two hundred years ago and made it a classic. Well, this was merely the backdrop for Lisa Kleypas' Hathoway family saga, and it helped to tie in the stories of Cam Rohan and Kev Merripen quite nicely. The only thing she got wrong about Gypsies in the British Isles is that they may speak a form of Romany - Latin and Sanskrit - but they are unlikely to be East Indian in origin because most are what the Irish call "Travelers" and have Celtic DNA, just like most others in that area of the world. If they had any olive or dark skin, it was from the assimilation of remnants of the soldiers and sailors of the Spanish Armada that landed /wrecked in various sites of Ireland and England after that debacle.

The story of Win's medical treatment and healthcare routine after Scarlet Fever was interesting; but Dr. Harrow was a real sleaze, as it turned out. There was too much of Will She? or Won't She? relative to Win and Kev; but once Kev had to do something to win his lover, he did it with no turning back. The added information about both Cam and Kev was handled in a delightfully clever plotline near the end. Catherine Marks and her exchanges with Leo are building to something because they do exhibit a rising sexual tension with every conversation that they have. It was a joy to see the Hunt's from the WALLFLOWERS in this story; and the Westcliff's always lend charm and levity to any story. While not of the same caliber as THE DEVIL IN WINTER, or MARRYING WINTERBOURNE, or even BECAUSE YOU'RE MINE, this is an entertaining and enjoyable read that is really closer to a 4.5 star rating than a 4. Cam is such a marvelous character that I do think any novel with him in it would rate a 4, at least.
Dear god, how tedious this book is! I love Lisa Kleypas and she is incredibly talented, but dear lord. Merripen, our hero, is exhausting. The whole book is basically one giant therapy session for this guy. He treats the heroine horribly; he is irrational, joyless, and entirely one note. The whole of Merripen's character is his obsession with the heroine. The book might as well be titled "The Merripen Show". Let me tell you a grown man who behaves like an emo 13 year old with a huge surplus of testosterone? NOT fun.

Poor Win, our heroine. This neanderthal treats her horribly throughout the entire novel; he bullies her, pushes her around, plays hot and cold, and deploys his "me Tarzan" schtick every 5 minutes. The first 30 % of the book is all right because one keeps hope for SOME growth for our whiny hero, but no. The whole thing becomes unbearably tedious about two thirds in. Sorry, but this one was a huge miss for me.
