Despite starting with an immediate slashing murder, it took a little bit before I really got into this book. However, it rapidly became something I could not put down! I literally tried to go to sleep TWICE that night and had to turn the light back on to read more because I couldn't stop thinking about it. Probably not the best book to start if you have a big job interview the next morning, for example! The heroine of the story is Lacey Flint, a young detective constable, who literally walks into the first victim seconds before she bleeds out.
Here's what's sooo good about this book: First, the blending of the story of the current crime with the infamous Jack The Ripper murders. While there are other stories with Ripper copycat crimes, this book did a great job with the history of the original events. I learned a lot about Jack The Ripper, and about Ripperologists (who knew that was a thing?), and about some of the various theories of the identity of the perpetrator.
Second, the building up of the suspense was incredible. When you can't sleep because you are thinking of the book, and you absolutely have to keep going to find out how it ends—that is more than just a “hard to put down” book. There were hints throughout the book of things that you will just HAVE to find out about!
Third, the twists in the plot were great. Every time I figured out what was going on, then NOPE, I had it wrong!
The bad (or really maybe just “less good”): the romance element seemed sort of flat, and I wasn't really feeling it. Also I felt like I wanted more of an explanation of some of the things that happened in the past (but I see that this is only Book 1 of a series, so maybe that's coming up in future books!).
Overall, a great book and I will definitely read the others in the series!!

I'd give this 6 stars if I could, and I rarely say that about a book.
Now You See Me will take you on one wild ride. I loved every single minute of this book! I honestly don't know if I've read a better psychological thriller.
The minute you think you have something figured out, the next few pages will prove you know nothing.
I had so many theories throughout this book, I drove myself half mad when they would be disproved, or another clue would be revealed and I'd have to form a new one. Eventually, I was disagreeing with myself over everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING. It was intense.
I absolutely loved the Ripper copycat aspect of the book. If you know me, you know I have a fascination with serial killers. I explained it in my review for 'I Hunt Killers', so I won't go into it again. As morbid and grotesque as it was at times (and it really, really was), it was also riveting. Jack the Ripper is probably the biggest unsolved crime mystery ever, and I absolutely loved Lacey's theory.
Let me be clear... to me, this book was perfection. It was brilliant. Now You See Me was always two steps ahead. If you are looking for a fast paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller, then I most definitely suggest Now You See Me. It will intrigue you. It will grab hold and not let you go. It will keep you guessing to the very last page.
This was my first Lacey Flint novel, though I've read several of the author's stand-alone books, and loved them all.
Lacey is a young detective caught up in what appears to be a Jack the Ripper copycat set of murders in London. Her own shady past could be entwined with the case, and she's not who she seems to be, a conundrum noticed by fellow detective Joesbury. He doesn't trust her, yet he's attracted to her.
Lacey's efforts to solve the murders and come to terms with her ugly past drives this story into creepy, thrilling territory. And an underground of London I never knew about. Lacey is full of flaws which makes her human, and a mystery-woman until the shocking ending. I couldn't put it down.
I will be reading the rest of this series.
Now You See Me, (not related to the movie of the same name), follows Lacey, a police constable as she helps a investigative team track down a serial killer.
This is an interesting one. I did not really like it to start with, and then there was a portion where I thought it was a 5star book before it came back down towards the end- so I end up at 4 stars.
Positives
+ Lacey is an interesting character. Obviously she has some demons but even taking these into account, she is not a typical female character. She slides from '100% focused investigator' to 'panicked' fairly regularly.
+ Interesting plot. There are some twists and turns in this one.
+ The plot is directly tied with Lacey's story. Sometimes on these detective series, the protagonist's story progresses very slowly with more emphasis on the individual crime. However, this novel does a good job of juggling both aspects.
Negatives
- Writing style. The flashbacks, and certain parts of the main story have a weird tone/style. It is hard to explain, but it makes the writing less personal and less relatable.
- The last turn in the plot, who the murderer actually is, was not layed out well imo. Yes, there are some clear signs, but the other possible identities of the killer are played up too much. It feels like the author tried to go for shock value but I was too puzzled to be shocked. (or maybe im just an idiot).
- The whole passive-aggressive love/hate thing that Lacey has going on with the guy is weird and didn't flow well.
