This was such a fun book. Life happens and even the best laid plans go awry. Danielle was a typically college student who's world got flipped upside down from one mistake. Dani was funny, charming and caring. I really loved her, and her name. (: Porter was so freaking adorable I could hardly stand it. This was such a wonderfully, funny quick read!

The Big F Maggie Ann Martin Books Reviews

The Big F is a book that I’ve had my eye on for awhile. It sounded like a great story when I first heard about it and then I started seeing quite a few positive reviews for it which made me even more interested in it.I ended up thoroughly enjoying The Big F when I read it.

You can probably tell from the blurb there’s a bit of a love triangle in The Big F. Danielle reconnects with her childhood crush, Luke, and ends up dating him, but also ends up becoming really good friends with her coworker, Porter. I really liked Luke at first, but as time went on, I found him to be annoying and rude. He doesn’t really communicate well with Danielle and I felt that she often felt pressured to stay with him (and have sex with him) because she had liked him when she was younger, even though he’s not really the best match for her. I really liked seeing Danielle get closer to Porter. They had a really great friendship, as Porter is really supportive of Danielle and tries to push her to do what will make her happy rather than what is expected of her. I don’t want to risk spoiling anything, so I’ll leave it at that.

For me, Danielle was the highlight of this book. She’s a wonderful protagonist. She starts off kind of insecure and not really sure of herself, as she just recently found out that her future plans have kind of been crushed. She’s really embarrassed and not sure what to do. But as time goes on, she starts to realize that it’s okay to make mistakes and that she can take time to figure out what she wants to do and how she can fix her mistakes. I loved seeing her slowly become sure of herself and more assertive; she eventually starts to do what will make her genuinely happy rather than what she feels is expected of her. I simply loved seeing her grow over the course of the story.

The one thing about The Big F that I didn’t like was that a lot of the girls were portrayed as catty, cruel, and jealous. Aside from Danielle’s best friend, Zoe, and her childhood best friend, Olivia, the girls in the book are pretty much all depicted as these bratty, selfish girls who are out to ruin Danielle’s life, confidence, friendships, etc. I mean, one of the first scenes in the book is a family dinner where her cousin forces her to admit in front of everyone that her acceptance into Ohio State was rescinded. Then there’s Porter’s girlfriend who gets jealous of Danielle and Porter being friends and Luke’s cousin who seems to enjoy nothing except talking about herself and how great her life is. It was frustrating to see so many women in the book be depicted so stereotypically.

I have to say though, I loved Danielle and Zoe’s friendship. Zoe is one of the few girls portrayed positively and she was so wonderful. She’s always really supportive of Danielle and helps her whenever she needs it. She pushes her to do what’s best for her and what will make her happy but also forces Danielle to face the truth when she’s ignoring it. Their friendship felt wonderfully real to me and was something that I absolutely adored reading about in the book. I only wish we had gotten more one-on-one scenes between the two of them, as a lot of the time, their interactions were in a group setting.

The Big F was pretty much everything I expected it to be. It’s a wonderful contemporary romance novel that’s perfect for someone looking for a cute, fun, quick read. The only issue I had was with how stereotypical some of the female characters were. Ultimately though I’m really pleased with The Big F and would recommend giving it a try if it sounds like something you’d like.

I volunteered to honestly review a complimentary copy of the book sent to me by the publisher.

The Big F is author Maggie Ann Martin’s debut novel, and I have to say, I loved it! The Big F is a young adult contemporary romance that is sure to put a smile on your face. This book gave me major Kasie West vibes…obviously in a great way! I honestly enjoyed everything about this book. Right from the moment I picked it up, to the very last page, I had a great time reading The Big F. Can we also talk about the awesome cover for a moment. I love it! I think it is so perfect for this story. I love the doodling on the cover as well.

The Big F is the story of Dani and Luke. Dani thought she had her future planned out, until an F got her rejected from her dream college. Can I first just say, this would have sent me into a tailspin when I was in high school, so I really related to Dani. I liked her character a lot. And I really loved Luke. I am such a sucker for a guy next door romance that I was rooting for them from the moment I read the summary. And Luke lived up to every bit of expectation I had for him.

One of my favorite things about The Big F, is that initially Dani is painted out to be a big overachiever. Totally type A, and this is a plot line path that I have seen explored in tons of ways. But I loved the direction that Maggie Ann Martin took this story in. Dani’s journey takes a detour through community college, and in this detour she really finds herself. I loved it. I loved her journey and I loved seeing this story told. I haven’t see it in young adult before, which was a big plus for me.

Not only were Dani and Luke great, I also liked the cast of secondary characters, including Dani’s family. I thought it was so refreshing to see a well adjusted family dynamic represented a young adult book. (You guys know how nasty parents can be a pet peeve of mine.) But I loved how Dani’s parents, brother and friends were portrayed. The Big F had excellent friendships, a great self journey for Dani and a really sweet romance. It was an overall really fun read. I cannot wait for more from Maggie Ann Martin. I am going to read her next novel for sure! The Big F was a hit with me!

*Disclaimer- I received a copy of this book for free. I was not compensated for my thoughts.
Such a great read! I was hooked from page one.
I absolutely adore this book. Danielle is likable and so SO relatable. Porter is definitely one of my top book boyfriends. It was a quick, fun, and funny read.
Life doesn’t always go along with the plans you make. Especially plans made for you.

An excellent story about life!
This author gets it! The story is told in such a way that the reader is engaged in the entire story.
The Big F is a fantastically charming YA novel that reminds us that everything really does happen for a reason. Author Maggie Ann Martin captures the excitement of uncertainty as Danielle navigates her life post-high school. Don't let the youthfulness of the characters fool you; this book is full of subtle, yet satisfying lessons on friendship, young love, family support, responsibility and owning your own mistakes.
